When David [Fincher] first called us about doing the title sequence he was still shooting in Sweden. It was a brief conversation and it was daunting. He said, “I wanna tell the whole story of all three books. I wanna do it in two and a half minutes and it has to be spectacular.” Next e-mail I get is just a list of words: “CG, very adult, super dark, leather, skin, blood, snow, breast, vaginas, needles, piercings, and motorcycles. And vengeance. Get back to me.” Throughout the process and actually through all the time that I’ve known him, he sends these little haiku-like e-mails. And he says, “Imagine a James Bond title sequence with a 20 year old bisexual cutter as a heroine and a buried story setting up the trilogy. Macabre, oblique, and yet…” And he expects you to fill in the blanks.
